The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Protestant Christian Adventist denomination which is distinguished by its Sabbath observance on Saturday, the seventh day of the week in the Christian (Gregorian) and Hebrew calendars, and its emphasis on Jesus Christ’s imminent Second Coming (advent). The denomination arose from the mid-nineteenth-century Millerite movement in the United States, and it was formally established in 1863. Ellen G. White, whose extensive writings are still revered by the church, was one of its co-founders.
Much of the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s theology is similar to common evangelical Christian beliefs, such as the Trinity and the infallibility of Scripture. The doctrine of an investigative judgment and the unconscious state of the dead are two distinct post-tribulation teachings. The church emphasizes diet and health, including Kosher food laws, vegetarianism, and its holistic view of human nature, which holds that the body, soul, and spirit are inseparable. “God created the universe, and in a recent six-day creation made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day,” according to the Church. Marriage is defined as a man and a woman’s lifelong union. Official beliefs include the second coming of Christ and the resurrection of the dead.
A General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists governs the global church, with smaller regions administered by divisions, unions, local conferences, and local missions. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is currently “one of the fastest-growing and most widespread churches in the world,” according to Wikipedia.
