Wizkid Early Life Before The Fame
Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun popularly known by his stage name ‘Wizkid’ is a Nigerian singer songwriter and stage performer born on the 16th of July, 1990 in Surulere, Lagos State. He attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School.
Wizkid was born into an interfaith family and polygamous family where his mother is a Christian and his father a Muslim. His father is married to three women and has thirteen
children where Wizkid is the only son among twelve female siblings.
Wizkid grew up listening to Bob Marley, Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade who served as a source of inspiration to him. At the age of 11 he formed a group with a number of his church
friends called Glorious Five.
The group managed to an album prior to rebranding where he went by the stage name ‘Lil Prinz’. He later met ‘OJB’ the record producer who coached him for one year. During this
time he watched ‘2Face Idibia’ record songs for his album, he was also watch ‘Sound Sultan’ record songs.
He signed a record deal with ‘Empire Mates Entertainment’ 1in 2009, he co-wrote ‘Omoge You Too Much’ in ‘Banky W’s The W Experience Album’. He also worked with ‘Naeto C’, ‘M.I.’, and Ikechukwu while developing his craft.
In 2009 Wizkid began recording his debut album titled ‘Superstar’. He released the album’s lead single ‘Holla At Your Boy’ on the 2nd of January 2010, the song earned him number of awards which includes Next Rated award at The Headies 2011, he was also awarded a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. It’s music video was nominated for Most Gifted Newcomer Video at the
2011 Channel O Music Video Awards.
On the 2nd of April, 2010, Wizkid released ‘Tease Me/Bad Guys’ the album’s second single.
The Superstar Album was recorded in English and Yoruba, it was had the elements of R&B, Afrobeats, Dancehall and Reggae. On the album he collaborated with record producers such as MasterKraft, E-Kelly, Jay Sleek and Shizzi. The album also featured guest performances from Wande Coal, Banky W, Skales.
The Superstar album bagged Best Album of the Year at the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and was nominated for Album of the Year at The Headies 2012.
He recorded his second album ‘Ayo’ between 2012 and 2014, the album featured guest performances from prominent artists. It’s producers are Spellz, Sarz, Uhuru among others.
The album was initially titled Chosen.
On the 2nd of May, 2013, Wizkid released the album’s lead single ‘Jaiye Jaiye’ which featured Femi Kuti, ‘On Top Your Matter’ the album’s second single was released in October 2013, it’s video shot and directed in South Africa by Sesan.
In January 2015, Wizkid released the music video for ‘Ojuelegba’, the songs official remix which featured Drake and Skepta.
Wizkid established his record label in March 2013 with the intentions give upcoming artists opportunity to showcase their talents, he signed Maleek Berry and Legendury Beatz.
He has worked with international artists like Drake, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, etc
